Sustainability, in the broadest sense of the word, is high on the strategic agenda of UMC Utrecht. Through our dedication to CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) we strive for balance between People, Planet, and Profit. On a practical level, we encourage sustainability by using like-minded suppliers, encouraging healthy diets, reducing food waste, and using a certified environmental management system (ISO 14001). We constantly ask ourselves what impact our work has on the environment, our communities, and how we can leave a sustainable legacy for the future.
UMC Utrecht strives to be the leader in sustainable care. We endeavor to find future-proof solutions for care, research, and education in ecological, economic, and social fields. Our mission is to shift the current emphasis from treating illnesses to supporting health in both patient care and the medical community. We aim to take the lead in seeing this change come to fruition by 2020.
To meet these goals UMC Utrecht has put in place a 'Sustainability Strategy'. Founded in early 2014, it contains the following five main priorities, illustrated by the following projects:
Prevention is the key to maintaining health and we know that the first step is to provide healthy, well-sourced food to our patients and community. We also know that movement and activity contributes greatly in the prevention and healing process of many diseases and disorders. We strive to create opportunities to support both of these initiatives by offering resources to our employees, and sharing this information on a broader scale. We invite the public to join us in lecture series, large events and presentations on the importance of these key prevention points.
For us it is not enough to share knowledge, we also feel our infrastructure and equipment are of great value and we openly invite collaboration both internally and externally. We want to find the BEST solution; encouraging partnerships that help us achieve this aim. We work with technology partners in the development of medical equipment to better serve the chain of care. We also focus our resources and talented professionals on the task of finding faster and better results with lower costs.
We care for our staff and students by supporting their career development and providing them with the means to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We value the insights of our employees and encourage them to provide us with honest feedback on how we can improve. We offer employees on all levels of service the resources and support they need to implement strategies for continuous improvement, professionally and personally.
At UMC Utrecht, it is not only our staff and patients we are trying to keep healthy, it is our planet too! UMC Utrecht strives to play its part by saving energy and using green energy sources. We produce less food waste, use less paper, and we are working to develop more sustainable building infrastructure on our campus. Our goal is to be CO2 neutral by 2030 and work with closed material cycles.
We are clear and open about what we do, and why we do it. A leading international independent commission (JCI) tests our quality. We are transparent about what we are investing in and why. We want our patients and community to understand and be involved in our decision making process and to feel comfortable holding us accountable.
