The pediatric Cystic Fibrosis (CF) center was founded in 1997. More than one third of all Dutch children with CF are treated in Utrecht, the center closely collaborates with clinicians and basic scientist from Rotterdam and The Hague. The character of CF closely fits in the Child Health Program (chronic inflammation, respiratory infections, orphan diseases/genetics), and is closely linked to other strategic programs of the UMC Utrecht (Infection and Immunity, Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells). The UMC Utrecht is a key player in education to professionals and families regarding CF at a national level.
On the international level, the UMC Utrecht participates in the European Clinical Trial Network; a collaborative network of the 30 largest CF centers in 11 European countries. Also, multi-center birth cohort study together with the UMC Utrecht and focusing on atopy and asthma, participates in the EU-FP7 MeDALL study. Due to the large Dutch study population (3600 children), its long-term follow-up (17 years), the high compliance of the participants and the availability of biological samples, the study plays a crucial role in answering clinical and epidemiological questions on the development of respiratory disease and questions on basic mechanisms (proteomics and transcriptomics).
