Much has been written in the scientific literature in the past few years about the possibility of using pacemakers to prevent or stop atrial arrhythmia. However, the results of these studies contradict one another. Willem de Voogt describes preventing atrial fibrillation by using a pacemaker. According to De Voogt, the design of the pacemaker lead wire currently in use is not sufficiently tailored to this aim, and the pacemaker software for this has not yet been fully developed. Only when the pacemaker lead and software have been modified can the effectiveness of using pacemakers to prevent atrial fibrillation be determined. Pacemakers cannot yet be recommended as a common practice for preventing atrial fibrillation.
