Depression from cardiovascular disease

Older men with depressive symptoms are at greater risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, especially from strokes and heart failure. This says Marjolein Kamphuis in her doctoral thesis.

This cannot be explained by unhealthy eating patterns and poor lifestyle. The increased risk can be explained in part by a poorer subjective state of health in men with symptoms of depression. This means that these symptoms are more likely to result from underlying, undiagnosed cardiovascular disease rather than to be the cause of this.
