Using T cells to fight cancer

In her doctoral thesis, Rozemarijn van Rijn describes a way to test immune therapy on cancer in mice.

A promising method for treating tumors is to inject them with T cells modified to destroy cancer cells, which is much more specific than chemotherapy. However, manipulated human T cells first have to be tested in an animal model before they can be given to patients.

Van Rijn describes modified immune cells that are injected into mice without an immune system. This is an important step on the way to clinical use of T cell immunotherapy to fight various kinds of cancer.
