In her doctoral dissertation, Suhreta Mujakovic studied whether there is a correlation between the onset of severe stomach complaints and psychological factors like psychopathology (symptoms such as depression and anxiety), most frequently used coping mechanisms, and significant, stressful life events.
She also studied whether there is a link between genetic predisposition and stomach complaints. General practitioners often see patients suffering from such complaints. The onset of stomach complaints is very complex. Various factors are involved, for example, an increase in the production of gastric juices, slower emptying of the stomach, a Helicobacter pylori infection, psychological factors, and recently, genetic predisposition.
Suhreta Mujakovic will receive her PhD from Utrecht University's Medical Faculty on December 18. The title of her dissertation is “Genetic and psychological determinants of dyspepsia and implications for treatment.”
