The Top Institute BioMedical Materials (BMM) program is giving fifty million euros to seven different research projects. Two of these studies are being conducted at University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht, one by Professor Wouter Dhert and the other by cardiologist Professor Pieter Doevendans.
The fifty million euros is being invested in Dutch research on biomedical materials for treating cardiovascular disease and musculoskeletal disorders and also in research on biomedical coatings and targeted drug delivery.
Along with Dr. Laura Creemers and others, Dhert is looking at how to use biomaterials in two different treatment methods focused on early intervention for herniated discs and degeneration of intervertebral discs.
Doevendans’ project concentrates on improving cardiac function in heart failure by administering autologous microtissue (stem cells).
BMM is a Dutch public-private partnership for research and development in the area of new biomedical materials and their therapeutic applications.
