Immunology and Infectious Diseases

Immunology and Infectious DiseasesThe program is focused on understanding the interactions between pathogens and human hosts to improve vaccine efficacy, diagnosis and treatment. We study how immunity to microbial pathogens and cancer is regulated, how it can be used to develop novel immune therapies, and the mechanisms of immune evasion that pathogens and cancer cells employ in causing disease. Research focuses strongly on immune pathology and chronic inflammation associated with autoimmune disease, allergy and clinical complications of allogeneic stem cell transplantation.

In regenerative medicine program, we investigate novel applications for hematopoietic stem cells that potentially can generate multiple tissues. From the pathogen-site we study population structures, transmission dynamics and escape mechanisms from inflammatory responses and antimicrobial agents. Here, we focus on innate immunity and antimicrobial resistance.

In all of our research, we employ state-of-the-art molecular and analytical techniques to stay in the international front lines of our field.
