Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells: develops stem cell based therapies aimed at musculoskeletal and cardiovascular tissue.
Ambition: to be one of Europe’s top regenerative medicine centers.
The Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine program brings together fundamental, translational and clinical scientists to create momentum in the field of regenerative medicine and stem cell therapies. The program will establish a recognized and internationally leading center for regenerative medicine and stem cell research, through which novel regenerative/ stem cell based treatments for patients are developed; high quality biomedical research is performed that attracts talented scientists; and future biomedical professionals will receive state-of-the art education.
The program focuses on pre-clinical stem cell/tissue regeneration research, and will make the translation towards clinical treatments in the fields of stem cell based therapies, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular tissue regeneration. There is already a strong connection between the pre-clinical stem cell research and the application areas.
Molecular geneticist Prof. Hans Clevers: “In 2015 we will have one of best research facilities in regenerative medicine in Europe in 2015 and the UMC Utrecht will attract clinical stem cell researchers from all over the world.”
