UMC Utrecht and the Graduate School of Life Sciences

MSc / PhD students Education in the Hijmans van den Bergh Building

The UMC Utrecht offers a wide range of Master and PhD programs. It is one of the largest university medical centers in the Netherlands and a leader in many areas of high quality (biomedical) education and research.

Graduate School of Life Sciences
The Utrecht University consists of 6 Graduate Schools. All Master and PhD programs of the UMC Utrecht are part of the
Graduate School of Life Sciences.
Therefore, PhD students at the UMC Utrecht earn a doctoral degree (PhD) at the Graduate School of Life Sciences of the Utrecht University.

This Graduate School of Life Sciences combines the expertise and education facilities of the UMC Utrecht (the former Faculty of Medicine), the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the Faculty of Science and the Hubrecht Institute (see below).
This unique collaboraton with and the presence of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine next to the UMC Utrecht and the collaboration with the Faculty of Science and the Hubrecht Institute, offers an unique concept and provides a creative, innovative and challanging research community, that shares an extensive range of state-of the art research facilities and knowledge.
Therefore Utrecht gained a strong international reputation in biomedical high quality research (e.g. in genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, stem cell biology and epidemiology).

Utrecht University
Each year over 400 PhD candidates begin their research projects at Utrecht University. Apart from applying to one of the available PhD positions, students and professionals having finished a graduate program may also submit PhD research proposals of their own.

Utrecht University was ranked the best university in the Netherlands and 7th best in Europe in the prestigious Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities 2007. Utrecht University is therefore amongst Europe’s leading research universities, renowned for both its innovative cross-disciplinary approach to research, and its emphasis on excellent quality in education.

Hubrecht Institute
As of january 2008, the UMC Utrecht closely collaborates with the Hubrecht Institute. The Hubrecht Institute, located next to the UMC Utrecht, is part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and focuses on developmental biology (mainly of animals) and stem cell research (including fetal, adult and cancer cells).

Their research encloses the entire developmental biology of animals; from the activation and inactivation of genes, to the development of whole organs such as the heart, the intestine and the brain. One important aim of research is developing the ability to repair organs that have suffered damage (e.g. during a heart attack), focussing on embryonic and tissue stem cells.
