The First International Workshop on Hemispherectomy

WHY WOULD YOU REMOVE HALF A BRAIN?

Dates: September 30th – October 1st

Location: University Medical Center Utrecht, The Netherlands

It is a pleasure to announce the First International Workshop on Hemispherectomy. This workshop will be held in Utrecht, The Netherlands this fall, September 30 – October 1, 2010.

The surgical removal and/or functional disconnection of one hemisphere to control seizures has become a standard and accepted treatment for children and sometimes in adults with severe hemispheric epilepsy over the past two decades. The goal of this workshop is to review 20 years of experience in cerebral hemispherectomy around the world addressing both clinical and scientific aspects of presurgical evaluation (including timing of surgery), surgical techniques, pathology as well as postoperative outcomes in areas of psychosocial, cognitive, language and motor development. foto5

This meeting is the first workshop to merge neurologists and neurosurgeons with neuropsychologists, neuroscientists and rehabilitation specialists. We hope that the Workshop will bridge clinical knowledge with insights into cortical plasticity and reorganization from basic science.
The target audience includes epileptologists, (pediatric) neurologists, (pediatric) neurosurgeons, clinical and basic neurophysiologists, neuropsychiatrists, neuropsychologists, neuroscientists, linguists and rehabilitation specialists. We hope to welcome established professionals as well as neurologists and neuroscientists in training.

Educational state-of-the art invited lectures covering all major clinical and preclinical topics will be given by a faculty of established neuroscientists and clinical experts in hemispherectomy from all over the world. Furthermore, we aim to organize interactive discussion groups and meet-the-expert sessions, stimulating active participation of all delegates and a discussion of difficult cases or controversial topics. Platform oral presentations will be selected from submitted abstracts enabling colleagues to share their most recent scientific data or clinical experience.
We kindly invite you to submit your abstracts that may cover a wide range of topics, including cortical plasticity, mechanisms of reorganization, animal models as well as clinical aspects of hemispherectomy. Afbeelding2
