Patient safety training for residents

In December of 2006, the first two-day patient safety course for residents took place as part of regional interdisciplinary training for residents.

Course objectives:
The students gain the knowledge and skills they need to recognize incidents and unsafe situations early on and contribute in a constructive way to devising and implementing measures for structurally improving patient safety.

The course is made up of ten parts. The subject matter covered in each part is explained below, and presentations can be downloaded.

Part 1 – Kick-off
The students learn about each other and their own preconceptions and opinions about errors and incidents.

Part 2 – Background
General introduction to the theme of patient safety, its history, definition, and the current national and international situation.

Part 3 – Human error
Introduction to "human factors" as the most important source of learning from errors and incidents. Guest lecture by Robert van Gelder, Boeing 747-400 captain and accident investigator.

Part 4 – Dealing with an incident
Training in skills for safe communication between colleagues and disciplines about incidents and errors.

Part 5 – Legal aspects of incidents
Interactive training on the legal aspects important to health care incidents.

Part 6 – Learning from errors
Introduction to commonly used methods for analyzing incidents and processes.

Part 7 – Guest lecture by Paul Barach
Presentation from the perspective of the "sharp end." Paul Barach is an anesthesiologist and an internationally renowned expert in the area of patient safety.

Part 8 – Contact with the patient after an incident
Training in skills for communicating with a patient after an incident.

Part 9 – Tips and tools for putting safety improvements into practice
Using the knowledge and skills acquired during the course, students come up with ways to put safety improvements into practice in their own working environment.

Part 10 – Evaluation
