Title research
Vestibular regeneration
Title research line Neuroprotection and Neuroregeneration
Summary research Many people suffer from vertigo caused by the side effects of many antibiotics. This is caused by loss of hair cells in the vestibular sensory organs. Until recently this loss was considered as irreversible in mammals. First we hope to give further evidence to the notion that vestibular hair cells can regenerate in mammals after loss and in the future we hope to induce this process pharmacologically.
Techniques: Electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry. Model: guinea pig.
In progress:
‘Comparison of effects of gentamicin treatment and kanamycin/furosemide co-treatment on cochlear and vestibular function’
