Title research
Effects of sleep disorders and their treatment on daytime functioning

Summary research
The focus of the research project is to examine the effects of sleep disturbances and their pharmacological treatment on daytime functioning and quality of life. Several sleep disturbances will be studied including insomnia, shift work sleep disorder and jet lag.
The first study of the research project investigates the next-morning effects of ramelteon, zopiclone and placebo on actual driving performance, memory functioning and psychomotor performance. Driving performance will be measured using the on-the-road driving test during normal traffic. In addition, literature studies on sleep-wake schedules in relation to occupational performance and traffic safety are conducted.
In the future, more studies on sleep medication and daytime functioning will be performed. The effects of work schedules on driving performance in shift workers will be assessed in an advanced STISIM driving simulator. Furthermore, research on sleep and/or alertness will be performed in laboratory animals.
