Title research
Mechanisms of conduction block in immune-mediated neuropathies

Summary research
Background: Demyelination has been held responsible for the occurrence of conduction block in neuropathies such as multifocal motor neuropathy and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. Recently however, other mechanisms leading to conduction block have been suggested: activity induced conduction block and depolarizing conduction block.
Methods:
1. weakness caused by activity induced conduction block during natural (daily) activity is studied using a questionnaire
2. force-measurements are performed to investigate activity induced/depolarizing conduction block
3. nerve conduction studies are performed to find electrophysiological evidence for activity induced conduction block
4. excitability studies are performed to assess membrane potential changes suggestive for activity induced or depolarizing conduction block
