Title research Longitudinal Cohort study to psychosocial functioning in stroke patients and their caregivers.
Summary research Stroke is the leading cause of disabilities in the western world. Yearly about 40.000 people suffer a stroke in the Netherlands, which equals more than 80 patients per day. The disease impact of stroke is considerable on stroke patients and their informal caregivers. In the long term particularly psychosocial problems have a negative impact on social reintegration and quality of life. Psychosocial problems after stroke, such as depression, anxiety, fatigue, decreased levels of social activities of both patients and their informal caregivers are underestimated and under diagnosed in clinical practice and evidence-based interventions for these problems are scarcely available.
This study is part of a larger project, ReStoRe, which consists of 4 studies, all aimed to enhance the successful social reintegration and to improve quality of life of stroke patients and their caregivers.
The specific aim of this study is to describe the course of social reintegration and quality of life and to determine factors predicting psychosocial problems.
