ProjectFunctional changes in cortico-striatal systems underlying cocaine addiction
SummaryDrug addiction is an enormous health problem, as well as a socio-economic and legal burden to our society, for which no adequate pharmacotherapy is available. This may be caused by our lack of neurobiological knowledge on the development of drug addiction, during which drug use escalates from casual to compulsive patterns. Using an animal model for compulsive cocaine seeking, this project aims to reveal neurobehavioral differences between recreational drug users and drug addicts. Ultimately, this research may contribute to development of novel pharmacotherapies, that tackle drug addiction at the core of the disorder.
