Dennis Schutter was born on June 18, 1975, in Numansdorp, the Netherlands. In 1995 he completed his secondary school education at the Willem de Zwijger Scholengemeenschap in Papendrecht. A year later, he passed his first-year examination in Psychology at the Utrecht University. He majored in theoretical and biological psychology and in 2000 obtained his master of science’s degree in Cognition and Emotion. He received a VSB scholarship and worked as a special volunteer/ researcher at the cognitive neuroscience section of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda , United States of America. In August 2001 he started working as a Ph.D. student in the department of Psychonomics of the Utrecht University on the project Cortical and subcortical affective pathways in the human brain and received his doctorate cum laude in December 2003. Presently, he works as a researcher at the department of Psychonomics of the Utrecht University on his NWO VENI project Homeostasis in emotion regulation: The affective cerebellar pacemaker hypothesis.
