The department of Virology at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU) in The Netherlands, has specialized in the analysis of microvolumes. Since 2002, the department serves as the national referral center for the diagnosis of intraocular infections. To that purpose it closely collaborates with the department of Ophthalmology at the UMCU. The laboratory annually receives 400-500 ocular fluids, which are routinely analyzed for the presence of a large range of pathogens. In addition, both departments are joined in a continuous research project focussing on the etiology and immunopathogenesis of (infectious) uveitis.
