Within the Experimental Cardiology laboratory, we work on research topics from bench to bedside. Main objectives are to unravel the mechanisms of arterial occlusive disease (atherosclerosis) and the repair of vascular tissue and myocardial damage after e.g. infarction. Next to experimental animal models, we study genetic markers in an atherosclerotic tissue bank (Athero-express) to verify our experimental observations, but also cell culture and diverse gene-therapy techniques are used to study underlying mechanisms (both in vitro as in vivo). A new line of research is the the role of cardiac progenitor cells in heart regeneration.

Techniques

Participation in animal experiments, morphometric analysis, cell culture, expression studies (RNA/protein), ELISA, FACS, Immunohistochemistry, transfections, Adenoviral overexpression, siRNA interference, cloning, sequencing, RNase protection assay, etc etc.
