Carolien de Kovel is a biologist, specialising in population genetics. She started her scientific career in plant biology and later switched her focus to humans. Her scientific interest is in the genetic architecture of complex traits. Of all complex traits, complex diseases are a special and interesting subset, because these traits would be expected to be under negative selection during evolution, yet they can become relatively common. One such disease is epilepsy, work on which constitutes an important part of Carolien de Kovel’s research.
