Roel Ophoff, PhD

Roel Ophoff is Professor of Molecular Genetics in the Department of Medical Genetics and the Rudolf Magnus Institute of Neuroscience at the UMC Utrecht. His work focuses on the study of psychiatric and neurological traits such as schizophrenia and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Advances in genomic technologies now make it possible to collect genome-wide data of genetic variation, gene expression profiles and epigenetic patterns. Dr. Ophoff's group employs all these approaches with the goal to gain a better understanding of why some individuals develop these brain-specific diseases while others stay healthy. This work brings together human geneticists and clinicians, bioinformaticians and statisticians, sometimes in large-scale international collaborative efforts.

Dr. Ophoff is also affiliated with the Center for Neurobehavioral Genetics at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA).

Interview with Roel Ophoff on 'The genetics of schizophrenia',  2 July 2008
"Finding genes associated with schizophrenia, examining the entire genome of hundreds of subjects. That’s the mission of Roel Ophoff, PhD. He was awarded a $3.8 million grant from the United States National Institute of Mental Health for this international endeavour. Ophoff is both assistant professor of human genetics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and associate professor of medical genetics at the UMC Utrecht. ... more"
