As a medical doctor or specialist at the UMC Utrecht and surrounding institutes, you will have access to internationally renowned
clinicians, researchers and students, cutting-edge technologies
and state-of-the-art facilities
. Due to its long history as a trading nation, The Netherlands welcomes individual and cultural differences, making it an open, international society within which many foreign specialists come to practice medicine. However

In order to practice medicine in The Netherlands, all doctors and medical specialists must be licensed. In addition, foreign doctors and medical specialists must meet the standards set by the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS)
and overseen by the BIG-Register
. These standards are specified in the Individual Health Care Professions Act
(Beroepen in de Gezondheidszorg - Wet BIG). Diploma from the EU
If you hold a diploma from a member state in the European Union, you may be eligible for the reciprocal agreement and your foreign diploma will be approved in The Netherlands. For more information and list of EU countries participating in this agreement, please visit the BIG-Register
website. Diploma from outside the EU
If you hold a diploma from a country outside of the European Union, you will be required to obtain a Declaration of Professional Competence. For more information, please visit the BIG-Register
website. In addition to obtaining the Declaration of Professional Competence, foreign specialists must also pass a Dutch language exam.
Please inquire with the department you wish to join for details about how to immigrate as a medical specialist.
