For how long and when can I conduct research abroad?
Please visit the
Utrecht University Graduate School of Life Sciences site for more information and documents. For a direct link to Study Abroad Information,
click here.Most BMS students conduct their minor research project in the laboratories at Utrecht University or another Dutch institute. Every year, however, there are also a number of students who arrange to complete a research project abroad.
Although the International Office does not have official agreements with other institutions, we do have an extensive list of locations and contacts where former BMS students have conducted research abroad. Please
inquire with us. If the location/institution you are interested in is not on our list, we encourage you to initiate contact yourself.
We advise you to initiate the study abroad application procedure about
1 year before you plan to travel abroad. Please discuss the feasibility of the research project with the research coordinator at the foreign institute as well as your program coordinator and your supervisor at Utrecht University or UMC Utrecht.
We encourage you to inform yourself about:- Training or knowledge needed prior to the start of the project;
- Feasibility of the project (will the timeline and scope enable you to successfully complete the project);
- If your project is in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company, will you be able to make your research and results public if necessary (to allow you to write your report);
- Whether the foreign institute requires a minimum timeframe for your research;
- Will you have a supervisor available at the level you need (will the level of supervision be suitable for you);
- Costs: does the university asks for fees, housing costs, etc;
- Insurance & health care: what do you need, and are immunizations needed;
- Validity of the paperwork (ECTS), which is dependent upon approval from the Board of Examiners.
- Please see the Graduate School of Life Sciences page for a checklist "Across Borders"
- Contact the research coordinator of your current academic program to make sure you meet the requirements for going abroad;
- Discuss specific research topics with the research coordinator;
- Contact a research group through the research coordinator: this will either be a foreign laboratory directly OR a UMC Utrecht laboratory, who will then contact the foreign laboratory on your behalf;
- Submit the required documents (see BMS Checklist) to the BMS administration office online or in person (HB.1.03). They, in turn, will submit all materials to the Board of Examiners and will send you the BoE's response.
- Please visit Utrecht University's website for requirements and admissions and more information.
If you register at the International Office, UMC Utrecht, we can provide you with information about going abroad, as well as some of the necessary documents.
For a Registration Form: a separate BMS form coming soon - for now, please fill out the form through this link.
