Clinical Health Sciences

Science is not confined to national borders. The importance of international cooperation in research is emphasized by the fact that the impact factor of publications based on international cooperation is higher than publications limited to one country (see NOWT, STI Report 2010). English is the main language for disseminating research results, and the UMC Utrecht Clinical Health Sciences Program is committed to providing their students with the tools participate on an international level.

The Clinical Health Sciences Program is for students who wish to earn a degree in Nursing Sciences of Physiotherapy Sciences. Students enroll in the program part-time; the year-long program is completed over 2 years.

For detailed information, please visit the Clinical Health Sciences website (in Dutch).

The Clinical Health Sciences Program includes:
• Compulsory literature that is partly in English (Dutch language publications are not excluded but can never be the sole source).
• The final phase of the program is completed by writing an article in English (in the format for submission to an international peer-reviewed journal)
• Invited guest speaker from abroad for one of the Health Sciences Today (HST) lectures.
• Students are encouraged to study abroad for during their 2nd year as a course elective or to conduct research for their project.
• The program provides a scholarship of € 500 for travel and accommodation to each student who goes abroad.

Study Abroad

There are several possibilities for students to go abroad. It is up to the student to initiate this by contacting the Course Coordinator of the Program who can help determine an appropriate location through research networks and contacts with foreign (or other Dutch) institutions.

Options for study abroad are:
  • Part of either the literature or final research project
  • Part of the electives
  • Replacement of one of the courses by a comparable course abroad (approval by the Examination Board required)
Timeframe for organizing study abroad
The Program understands that Clinical Health Sciences students must balance their education with work and sometimes a family. We therefore suggest starting early with preparations for study abroad.

The International Office, UMC Utrecht (international.office@umcutrecht.nl) is happy to speak with students interested in going abroad and encourage students to make an appointment to discuss the process and how the International Office can help.

Scholarship Request

An application for study abroad can be submitted using a form Electives.

This form gives students a description of the activities they may undertake abroad, the period, Course Coordinator and the course during which these activities take place, including the details of the student applicant.

Scholarship payment is the form of reimbursement and is be based on actual costs. The student shall after the returning from their time abroad, hand in travel receipts along with the Scholarship form.
