Introduction
Every year, about 350 medical students go abroad for clinical or scientific internships. Studying and practicing medicine in other parts of the world can greatly expand your understanding of global health issues, expose you to the traditions and beliefs of people from other cultures, and enhance your clinical skills.
As the world becomes increasingly integrated, it is essential for scientists and healthcare professionals to understand each other in order to improve our quality of health care and research. You have the chance to conduct hands-on medical research at an internationally renowned institute, to personally interact with experts in your field of interest, and to gain experience in using some of the most sophisticated technologies to date. In addition, you will gain first-hand experience in an international setting and continue to build your international network.
Abroad you have the opportunity to become an ambassador for the UMC Utrecht and to play an important role in establishing long-lasting relationships with medical and research facilities around the world. The UMC international office encourages students to do research and/or clinical electives abroad, and we offer various opportunities for students to experience medicine as it is practiced overseas.
We advise you to begin organizing your internship at least 1 year prior to your departure.
Contract Institutions - Clinical Internships
The UMC international office has various agreements with institutions abroad for clinical internships. The internships available and the number of students may vary for each institution. All applications for placement at a contract institute are coordinated through the International Office, UMC Utrecht. Application is available twice a year, please check the deadline for the next round
If you wish to go to an institute where the UMC Utrecht has an agreement, please visit the FAQ - Contract Institutions section for information.
Non-Contract Institutions - Clinical Internships
If you prefer to go somewhere else, you are allowed to arrange an internship at another institution. However you should always check the requirements of the internship with the education coordinator since these may vary. Approval from both the education coordinator and the internship planning department is obligatory, so please check your plans with these departments in time - before submitting your application - in order to avoid disappointment. You are responsible for organizing your own internship, however, you will need to register at the International Office. The International Office can provide some of the documents necessary for your internship abroad.
If you wish to go to an institute where the UMC Utrecht does not have an official agreement, please visit the FAQ - Non-Contract Institutions section for information.
Scientific Internships
Scientific internships abroad are always arranged on an individual basis. You can contact a researcher directly or get in touch with the laboratory of your interest to inquire about the possibilities to do an internship at their institution.
