The different research activities of the department of Medical Microbiology range from large-scale clinical intervention studies to molecular and genomic research. Evasion strategies of bacteria and viruses is the central research theme.
There is extensive collaboration between the different research groups in the department, as well as with other disciplines within the UMC Utrecht and other faculties of the Utrecht University, and with multiple national and international research groups. Research fundings come from the UMC Utrecht, NWO, Zorgonderzoek Nederland, European Frameworks and pharmaceutical and biomedical companies.
All research activities participate in the
Infection and Immunity Center Utrecht (IICU), the result of the integration of existing and new initiatives in the area of Infection & Immunity (I & I) at Utrecht Life Sciences. All of the specialised research that is conducted in the area of Infection & Immunity within Utrecht Life Sciences is incorporated into the focus area of Infection & Immunity. This includes the research programmes Strategic Infection Biology (SIB) at the faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Infection and Immunity that is given by UMC Utrecht.
