National Center for Prion Diseases autopsies
In The Netherlands, autopsies on patients suspected of prion diseases like Creutzfeldt Jakob's Disease, or hereditary prion diseases like Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker's Disease are performed at the Department of Pathology of the UMC Utrecht. Such autopsies require special facilities to perform autopsies and handle patient material by specifically trained personnel under the highest safety conditions. Confirmation of the prion disease diagnosis is important to get new insight in and information about the number of patients who have a rare new variant of Creutzfeldt Jakob's Disease.
