Niels Bovenschen studied Medical Biology at the Free University in Amsterdam. During his PhD at Sanquin Research at CLB Amsterdam from 1999-2003, he conducted biochemical research on the molecular mechanisms that underlie the clearance of coagulation factor VIII from the circulation in the context of hemophilia and thrombosis. After obtaining his PhD degree in 2003, he moved to Leiden (TNO, Gaubius Laboratory) to pursue with in vivo experiments on factor VIII catabolism. In 2004, he has moved to the department of Pathology at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU). In 2006, he has received a highly prestigious personal VENI grant Netherlands from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) for his work on the serine protease components (i.e. granzymes) in the cytolytic granules of cytotoxic lymphocytes. In 2008 he received a funding from the Dutch Society for Cancer Research (KWF) and in 2009 he became an independent group leader (assistant professor) at the department of Pathology (UMCU). His research group now focuses on the molecular mechanisms by which granzymes kill tumor cells and eliminate virus infected cells, and how these target cells are able to escape from granzyme-induced killing and thus the immune system. These aims fit within the field of immunity and infection. He is in charge of the Proteomics facility of the UMCU Division Laboratories and Pharmacy (DLA) and he contributes to the (bio)medical educational programs at the UMCU.
