Biography Roel de Weger
Roelof Anne de Weger (1952) studied Biochemistry at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands and Immunology at the University of Birmingham, Great Britain. He did his Ph.D on the role of macrophages in tumour immunology at the University of Utrecht.
Since 1990 he is associate professor and head of the subdivision of Molecular and Immunopathology in the Department of Pathology at the University Medical Centre Utrecht, and as such responsible for the development of immunohistochemical and molecular biological techniques for tissue analysis used in diagnostic histopathology and research.
He is involved in teaching graduate and post-graduate medical and biomedical students at the University of Utrecht, teaching immunology, inflammation, histopathological, and molecular biological techniques.
His research is presently focussed on heart transplantation (cardiac allograft vasculopathy in humans) and reverse remodelling of the myocardium after mechanical support by left ventricular assist devices. Chimerism analysis after bone marrow transplantation by short tandem repeats is a second focus of research.
