Welcome
Welcome to the research website of the Division of Perioperative & Emergency Care at the University Medical Center, Utrecht, the Netherlands. On this site you can meet our researchers and view ongoing and past research projects.
At UMC Utrecht we feel strongly that the clinical practice of perioperative medicine needs to be firmly rooted in basic science and clinical research. High quality anesthesia has made modern complex surgical procedures possible. Anesthesiology could develop into one of the safest medical specialties thanks to the research efforts of many pioneers, including Arthur Guedell (scoring system for depth of anesthesia), Harvey Cushing (blood pressure monitoring, anesthesia record – later a famous neurosurgeon), Virginia Apgar, (a simple but highly effective prognostic score for newborns) and John Severinghaus, who invented blood gas analysis. Intensive care became possible thanks to innovations in mechanical ventilation during the polio epidemic in the 1950’s. Numerous developments in clinical monitoring and pharmacology in the last decades have further strengthened the scientific basis of anesthesia and intensive care.
While we fully acknowledge the importance of basic science to move perioperative medicine forward, we have decided to focus our efforts on clinical research; the two major topics in Utrecht are perioperative outcomes research and chronic pain.
Please feel free to explore this website to see what we are currently working on.
Do not hesitate to contact us if you are interested in scientific collaboration or if you would like to know more about the possibilities of joining our department as a clinician/scientist.
