He started medical school in 1996 at the Rijksuniversitair Centrum Antwerpen in Belgium. In 1997 he continued his medical school at the University of Utrecht in The Netherlands. In March 2008 he started his PhD project with the title: Coagulation and Lysis Optimization in Thoracic Surgery. (Promotores: Prof. C.J. Kalkman, MD and Prof. K.G.M. Moons, MD)
This project is designed to evaluate different strategies to reduce blood loss and transfusion of blood products in cardiac surgery procedures. One part of this project concerns the validation of “point of care” monitoring during cardiac surgery. Another part of this project aims to asses the effects of selectively used procoagulant and antifibrinolytic medication in cardiac surgery in relation to blood loss and transfusion of blood products.
