About
Tammo Brouwer is an anesthesiologist since 1999 and is now a staff anesthesiologist in the Medical Center Leeuwarden (MCL) together with 19 colleagues. The MCL is a large referral hospital performing over 18.000 operations a year in all surgical disciplines except intra-cranial (neuro)surgery.

Before starting his residency in Anesthesiology he has worked one year as a research fellow at the department of Anesthesiology at the Stanford University Hospital under professor Whitcher and professor Hackel. He studied the use of capnography during aero medical transport and during ventilation in neonates. He began his residency in 1992 at the University Medical Center Groningen. He has worked there as a staff anaesthesiologist till 2000. During his residency he became interested in doing clinical studies with a special interest in postoperative urinary retention (POUR), together with Boukes Eindhoven, anaesthesiologist in the UMCG. They were the first to write an article about the clinical use of the BladderScan™ in anaesthesiology [1]. After being invited by professor Francis Bonnet, chief editor of the French journal Le Practicien en Anesthésie - réanimation he wrote a French review article about POUR, [2]. He was also a co-author with Hawa Keita from Paris with an article about using the BladderScan™ at the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit [3].

Due to starting a family and his busy work in the hospital he restarted his research in postoperative urinary retention just a few years ago. Momentarily he is finishing a large prospective study about POUR in the MCL. This will be part of his thesis in conjunction with professor Kalkman en professor Moons.
Next to his research activities Tammo Brouwer is participating in other clinical studies such as anaesthesia during laparoscopic colonic surgery and the effects on Early Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), anaesthesia during bariatric surgery and he is writing a hospital protocol about (dis)continuation of oral-anticoagulants.
