About
Suzanne Flier is a PhD student at the Department of Anesthesiology, Rudolf Magnus Institute of Neurosciences, University Medical Centre Utrecht. Her research focus is the Inflammatory Response during Anesthesia and Surgery (IRAS). Professor W.F.F.A. Buhre and Professor C.J. Kalkman are her promotors.
In 2006 she performed a randomised controlled trial in which 100 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) were randomised to receive either the volatile anesthetic isoflurane or the intravenous anesthetic propofol. Perioperative myocardial ischemia was measured by means of cardiac Troponin-I. Also, data on inflammatory markers of peripheral blood samples was collected during and after surgery. In addition, these patients were followed for one year to assess major outcome events.
In 2007 she completed the first year of training as a resident in anesthesiology. Currently, data from the trial is being analysed to serve as the backbone of several manuscripts. Moreover, she enrolled in the postgraduate master of clinical epidemiology at the Julius Center Utrecht. From April 1, 2009 she will continue her anesthesiology training in a primary care centre. In 2013 she expects to finish her clinical training and become an anesthesiologist.
