About
Teus Kappen is a resident and PhD student at the anesthesiology department of the UMC Utrecht. His PhD thesis concerns the use of prediction rules in daily clinical practice and their benefit to patient care. In a substantial, cluster-randomized trial (N = 12,000) a prediction rule for postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) was implemented, providing anesthesiologists with a predicted risk of PONV for every individual patient. The goal was to evaluate whether this additional information affected the behaviour of anesthesiologists and consequently led to a decrease in the occurrence of PONV among patients.
He was also involved in several other research projects. During medical school he collaborated with the NIVEL to study patients’ presentations of medically unexplained symptoms and the response of their physicians. Furthermore, he participated in retrospective studies of peri-operative blood pressure management and evaluation of the Dutch anesthesiology complication registration system. At the present time he is concluding his MSc Epidemiology at the University of Utrecht.
