About Erik Koomen was born at the spring of 1973 in Amstelveen, The Netherlands. He studied Medicine in Amsterdam and received his degree in 1998. He became a resident in Anaesthesia at the University Hospital Maastricht. During his residency he trained for 6 months in Auckland, New Zealand, at Starship Children’s Hospital as a resident at the paediatric intensive care unit. In 2005 he did fellowships in paediatric anaesthesia and paediatric intensive care at the Sophia Children’s Hospital, Erasmus University Hospital, Rotterdam.
From 2006 he worked as consultant for the Paediatric Anaesthesia at the Sophia Children’s Hospital.
In 2009, he joined the UMC Utrecht, as staff Anaesthesiologist with special attendance to Paediatric Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Paediatric Intensive Care.
Interest and Focus Erik Koomen’s main research interest is optimization of medication of critically ill patients (in the perioperative period). He starts his PhD in Pharmacokinetics (PK) and Pharamacodynamics (PD) of neuromuscular relaxants in neonates and small paediatric patients in 2010. In which he will address proper monitoring tools for the measurement of relaxation in neonates and the small children and describe the impact of maturation on the PK/PD of neuromuscular agents. Another topic of interest is the clinical implementation of new technology; the evolution of the anaesthetic machines / ventilators and human factors.
