About Thomas Ottens was born on the 20th of June 1986 in Schiedam, The Netherlands. He graduated from the Erasmus University Medical Center (Erasmus MC) Rotterdam (Netherlands) in 2010. He also obtained a Master of Science degree in clinical research from the Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences (NIHES) Rotterdam (Netherlands), for which he participated in the Quality Improvement Study Group of the Department of Anesthesiology of the Erasmus University Medical Center (Erasmus MC) Rotterdam. The group has set up a new quality audit infrastructure, combining continuous registration of (adverse) anesthetic outcomes and patient satisfaction at the Ambulatory Surgery Department of the Erasmus University Medical Center (supervisor: Dr. F. Grüne).
He now combines specialist training in anesthesiology at the University Medical Center Utrecht with a PhD project on end-organ effects of high-dose dexamethasone for cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (promotores: Prof. C.J. Kalkman, Dr. D. van Dijk). His PhD project encompasses several substudies of the DExamethasone in Cardiac Surgery (DECS) study, a multicenter randomized trial evaluating the effect of a single intraoperative dose of dexamethasone on the outcome of cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.
Interest and focus
Thomas’ current research focus is on neurocognitive outcomes of cardiothoracic surgery and anesthesia.
