About
Wolfgang Buhre was born in Goettingen, Germany in 1965. He studied Medicine in Goettingen and Zurich and received his M.D. degree in 1992. He became a resident in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine at the University Hospital Goettingen. In 1995 he did fellowships in cardiac anaesthesia and transesophageal echocardiography at the University Hospital Zurich/Switzerland.

From 2000 to 2004 he worked as lead Clinician for Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anaesthesia at the University of Aachen Medical Center. He obtained his PhD-Thesis in 2002 at Aachen Medical School (Anti-inflammatory properties of Isoflurane in Patients undergoing CABG-surgery).

In 2005, he joined the UMC as staff Anesthesiologist with special attendance to Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia. In 2006, he was appointed Vice Chair of the Department of Anaesthesia and Surgical Intensive Care, Cologne Medical Center. In 2008 he was appointed Professor of Anesthesiology at the University Medical Center Utrecht. Since 2009 he is head of the Department of Anesthesiology.

Interests and Focus
Wolfgang Buhre's main research interest is optimization of the management of critically ill patients in the perioperative period. He is actually studying the effects of different anaesthetics on the inflammatory response to trauma and ischemia reperfusion injury. Further research will be directed on local ischaemia aiming to define risk factors in high risk surgical patients. Another topic of interest is the clinical validation of new monitoring technology and team performance in the perioperative setting.
Wolfgang is member of the Editorial board of the german anaesthesia journal „Der Anaesthesist“. In addition he serves as section editor for „Current opinion in Anesthesiology“ and reviewer for a number of journals in the field of anaesthesia and critical care.
