About Olaf Cremer (1971) was trained as an anesthesiologist and clinical epidemiologist at the University Medical Center Utrecht. After obtaining his PhD degree in 2005, he did a fellowship in intensive care medicine at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. Since his return to Utrecht in 2007, he has been working as a full-time intensivist. Olaf has designed and co-developed the patient data management system that is currently used in the department of intensive care medicine. His detailed knowledge of the system and computer programming skills allow him to explore this clinical database as a rich source of information for several research projects within the division.
Interest and focus Olaf Cremer wrote his doctoral thesis on the goal-directed management of patients with severe traumatic brain injury in the intensive care unit. His thesis included both clinical experimental studies focused on cerebrovascular pathophysiology, as well as large cohort studies focused on patient outcomes. Since 2008 his research focus has shifted towards outcome prediction and host-response modeling in patients with (severe) sepsis. To this aim, he is one of the stakeholders of the MARS (Molecular Diagnosis and Risk Stratification in Sepsis) study, a CTMM-funded multicenter project aiming to develop and validate new technologies for early diagnosis and prognostication in sepsis. He currently tutors two PhD students.
