About
Diederik van Dijk is an epidemiologist and anesthesiologist. His research focuses on topics in cardiac anesthesiology. As principal investigator of the Octopus Study, Diederik van Dijk wrote his PhD thesis about the effect of the heart-lung machine on cognitive outcomes after coronary bypass surgery. This study was funded by the Netherlands National Health Insurance Council and led to publications in NEJM, JAMA, Circulation and Heart.
A 5 year follow-up study was funded by the International Anesthesia Research Society and was also published in JAMA. Diederik van Dijk is at present involved in the Opticare trial, a randomized clinical trial which compares cardiac surgery with and without epidural anesthesia. Patients (n=640) were enrolled at the Isala Clinics in Zwolle and the Medisch Spectrum Twente, and their inclusion was recently completed.

He is also project leader of the Dexamethasone for Cardiac Surgery trial (DECS), a multicenter study evaluating the effect of a single intraoperative injection of dexamethasone on major adverse events after cardiac surgery. Between 2007 and 2010, a total of 4500 patients will be enrolled in 8 centres for cardiac surgery in The Netherlands. The DECS trial is funded by the Netherlands Heart Foundation and ZonMW.
