About Irene Jongerden is a researcher with a background in nursing and nursing science. She was coordinator and principal investigator of a trial on endotracheal suctioning in intensive care patients, which was performed in 2 Dutch hospitals (UMC Utrecht and St Elisabeth Hospital Tilburg). In this trial effectiveness of open and closed endotracheal suction systems were compared, with a main focus on acquisition and cross-transmission with Gram-negative bacteriaea. Over 1,100 patients were included from January 2007 to February 2008, and the main results were published in 2011. In May 2011 she defended her PhD thesis, entitled “Airway management and respiratory tract colonization in intensive care patients”.
