About
Hans Knape (born August 12, 1950) was trained as anesthesiologist at the University Hospital Amsterdam in 1979. After completion of his PhD thesis on the interaction of the peripheral sympathetic system and the renin-angiotensin system, he was employed as anesthesiologists and clinical investigator in the St Luke Hospital and the Vereeniging voor Ziekenverpleging in Amsterdam and in the University Hospital Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
He was appointed chair of Anesthesiology at Utrecht University in 1992.

Hans Knape focusses on education and training in Anesthesiology and is responsible for training of 50 residents in Anesthesiology.
His clinical interests focusses on the topics of education, acute pain medicine, emergency medicine drowning, and of sedation by non-anaesthesiologists. He has been involved in the development of several national clinical guidelines, recently as chair of the revised guideline for sedation by non-anaesthesiologists.

Hans Knape was president of the first World Congress on Drowning in 2002. He served as delegate to and president of the European Board of Anaesthesiology 2003 – 2007 and as president of the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) 2008/2009.

Hans Knape was awarded honorary fellowships of the British, the Irish, the Bulgarian and German Colleges of Anaesthesiologists, honorary membership of the Netherlands Society of Nurse Anaesthetists, Knighthood of the Order of Orange Nassau and the Cross of Honour of the House Order of Orange.
