About Ton Schouten is pediatric anesthetist and involved in pediatric cardiac anesthesia and pediatric intensive care. He is member of the safety committee of the department and coordinator and chair of the two weekly "case report meetings". His motto is: "I have never given a perfect anesthetic".
His research focuses on the quality of team work in the peri-operative setting, which affects directly the incidence of undesirable events during surgery and with that the surgical outcomes. He is one of the primary investigators in a prospective observational study- a collaboration between DP&S, the UMC Utrecht Patient Safety Center and TNO Defence, Security and Safety - on the effect of human factors on non-routine events, resilience and outcome in pediatric cardiac surgery.
