About Bas van Zaane was born on the 3rd of april, 1976 in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. He started medical school in 1997 at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam and graduated in 2003. After a period working as a resident at the intensive care unit of the Isala Clinics, Zwolle the Netherlands he started his specialist training in anesthesiology at the Department of Perioperative Care and Emergency Medicine of the University Medical Center Utrecht (Chair of the program: Prof. J.T.A. Knape) in 2005. Simultaneously he started his PhD traject. He obtained his Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Utrecht in January 2007 and his PhD degree in november 2009 (Promotores: Prof. K.G.M. Moons, Prof. C.J. Kalkman, and Prof. W.F. Buhre).
The title of his thesis is "Imaging of the distal ascending aorta using modified tranesophageal echocardiography in cardiac surgery". The work in this thesis describes the different phases in the evaluation of a new diagnostic test to assess the distal ascending aorta for atherosclerosis in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
