Symposium over neonatale stroke

Neonatal neurology is becoming an increasingly important part of modern neonatal intensive care, with rapid advances with regard to diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic intervention. The increased understanding of etiology and pathogenesis concerning hemorrhagic and ischemic brain lesions in preterm and full term infants gives rise to the development of more specific therapies.

The Perinatal Center of the University Medical Center Utrecht has a special research interest in acquired neonatal neurological disorders and the expertise in this field is rapidly increasing. This affects both medical as well as nursing care. As certain neonatal neurological disorders require immediate specialised medical and nursing care and intervention, we recently decided to open a “Neonatal Stroke Unit”.

In order to celebrate this important step, we organise this one day “symposium”, which has a focus on several aspects of neonatal stroke. Neonatal stroke occurs in at least 1 per 4000 live births. Early diagnosis is important and can help in early and precise prediction of neurodevelopmental outcome. New and specific interventions are emerging both in the neonatal period as well as in infancy and early childhood.
