Dr. Rick Grobbee, professor of Clinical Epidemiology and university professor of Global Health, has been appointed Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. Mayor Koos Janssen of Zeist presented the corresponding award during festivities organized by the University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht Julius Center in celebration of its 20th anniversary.

As a professor of Clinical Epidemiology at UMC Utrecht and university professor of International Health Sciences and Global Health at Utrecht University, Grobbee has made an important contribution to the level of national and international epidemiological research and education. His work has had a major impact on the development of medical guidelines, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Grobbee has conducted research into the risk factors and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in the Netherlands and elsewhere and, most recently, into the interaction between infectious diseases like HIV and chronic diseases in Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Academic workplace

In Utrecht in 1996, Rick Grobbee was appointed university professor of Clinical Epidemiology and, in that capacity, established the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care. This professor also took the initiative to establish a number of health centers in the Leidsche Rijn district of Utrecht, thereby creating a unique academic workplace for general practice in the Netherlands: the Leidsche Rijn Julius Health Center. In early 2008, Grobbee founded Julius Clinical. A total of 150 employees in more than thirty countries carry out clinical studies on behalf of this Academic Contract Research Organization, primarily in the areas of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and infection prevention.

Cardiovascular Center

In 2010, Grobbee was appointed chairman of the Center for Circulatory Health at UMC Utrecht, which combines cardiovascular patient care and research within UMC Utrecht. That same year, he was appointed university professor of International Health Sciences and Global Health. He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and was chairman of the Medicine section and chairman of the Council for Medical Sciences (Raad voor de Medische Wetenschappen). He is an honorary professor in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Sydney, Australia. Grobbee is also chairman and a member of various committee and supervisory boards focusing on scientific research and healthcare in the Netherlands and abroad.

Epidemiological education

Apart from his research activities, Rick Grobbee is also strongly committed to epidemiological education. He is program director of the international Master of Science and PhD Epidemiology program at Utrecht University and the initiator of the academic e-learning platform Elevate Health. Grobbee has received various awards for his work, has co-authored more than 1,200 international publications and supervised more than 150 PhD students.

Contribution to society

In recent years, Grobbee has increasingly shared his scientific knowledge and experience within the field of healthcare and academic world to benefit society by initiating large-scale multidisciplinary national and international partnerships, among other initiatives. These activities, aimed primarily at gaining more insight into the causes and prevention of common conditions, have enabled him to make an important contribution to improving the health of society.
