Biography

Miguel Castilho is an Assistant Professor of Biofabrication at the Department of Orthopedics, University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU) and a Guest Researcher at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His research focuses on manufacturing bio-inspired structural materials for musculoskeletal tissue engineering, in particular bone. A special focus lies on the integration of mechanotransduction concepts in biofabricated implants. At the UMCU, he personally leads the research efforts on the development of custom additive manufacturing systems for biomaterials processing and biofabrication. Dr. Castilho holds a MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in Biomedical engineering (with high distinction) from the Technical University of Lisbon (IST, Portugal). In addition, he was a visiting research scholar at the Department for Functional Materials in Medicine and Dentistry, University of Würzburg, Germany, and at the Center for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development, Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Portugal. For his contributions to the Biofabrication field he was awarded the Young investigator award from the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, USA.
