Research Programs


Jaap Kappelle was registered as a clinical neurologist in 1988. He obtained his PhD degree in Utrecht (1990) with Jan van Gijn. He carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, USA (1991) and the John P. Robarts Research Institute, London (Ontario) Canada (1998). He was appointed assistant professor at the University Utrecht in 1988, associate professor in 1994 and full professor in 2000.  He is head of the department of cerebrovascular diseases of the University Medical Centre (UMC) Utrecht.

His research is embedded in the UMC Utrecht Stroke Centre in close collaboration with the departments of neurosurgery, radiology, vascular medicine, vascular surgery, rehabilitation, clinical epidemiology, primary health care and neuropsychology. The current line of research concerns stroke, in particular the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of patients with TIA or ischaemic stroke. As part of his research activities he is member of steering committees of reserrch proframs embedded in 'Cardio-Vasculair Onderzoek Nederland'. 

He is a member of the education committee if the Dutch Neurological Society and Dutch delegate for stroke of the European Association of Neurology. Besides his regular education duties in the UMC Utrecht, he is memeber of the board of supervisors of the Medical student Societÿ 'MSFU SAMS)

Jaap Kappelle is member elect of the European Stroke Council and premium professional silver heart memeber  of the American Heart Associatiuon. He is member of the board of directors of the Dutch Vascular Society and member of the scientific committee of ‘CardioVasculair Onderzoek Nederland’ founder of the Dutch Neurovascular Society. He is also a member of the 'Nederlandse Vereniging voor Medsich Specialistische Rappoprtages and serves as neutral expert for different courts, insurance companies and health care organisations.
