Biography

Femke van Wijk obtained her PhD on mechanisms of oral tolerance and allergic sensitization to peanut at the Utrecht University in 2006. After her first postdoctoral training in human immunology in the lab of Prof Prakken she obtained a KNAW fellowship for a 2-year postdoc in the lab of Dr. Cheroutre in the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology in San Diego. In this basic immunology institute she worked on T cell plasticity and tissue-controlled T cell differentiation. After being awarded a VENI fellowship in 2010, she moved to the UMC Utrecht to further develop her research program in translational immunology. For her research on how antigen presenting cells sabotage T cell regulation in inflammation van Wijk was awarded a VIDI grant (2014) and starting 2015 she has been appointed Associate Professor. Her research is embedded in the Laboratory of Translational Immunology and Pediatric Immunology group and addresses conceptual and mechanistic immunological questions with a strong link to the clinic. She is participating in several worldwide networks including Eureka Institute for Translational Medicine (www.eurekainstitute.org) and Understanding Childhood Arthritis Worldwide Network (www.ucan-u.org) that are aimed at (international) exchanges and training of people, knowledge sharing, and enhancing reproducibility of human data.
