The mission of the research program of the department of clinical pharmacy & clinical pharmacology is to explain, predict and improve patients’ response to pharmacotherapeutic treatment.

There are crosslinks to the research themes Brain, Infection & Immunity, Child Health and RM/stem cells. Patient outcomes in and across the home care setting, the hospital and highly specialized care settings are subject to study.

Clinical pharmacology, PK-PD modelling, clinical pharmacoepidemiology, cellular therapy development and drug formulation are key areas of expertise. The department of clinical pharmacy houses infrastructure and expertise supportive for researchers including a LC-MS platform, a GMP compliant medicines production facility, a production facility for cellular therapies, and the UPOD database containing prescription and biomarker information, a unit taking care of the GCP aspects of clinical drug research.

The majority of the researchers combine their research activities with tasks in patient care. Likewise there are strong liaisons with medical groups within the UMC Utrecht and many other health care centers. In addition, there is a close collaboration with the department of pharmaceutical sciences of the Faculty of Science of Utrecht University.

The research is focused on six themes:

Systems pharmacy

Drug Formulations

Infection & Immunology

Child Health

Regenerative medicine and stem cells
